From kindergarten through 8th grade, my brothers and I were usually the only black kids at the school. I played a lot of sports growing up (gymnastics, soccer, track, and basketball) and made a lot of my friends through sports. I was about to start high school when we moved to a new school district, which meant I'd have to make all new friends. Basketball and gymnastics were my favorite sports but the seasons overlapped. I had to pick one to play in high school and I chose basketball. Our school had two full courts with one being upstairs. At the start of the year, I was glad to see way more minorities (we had about 1000 kids at the school). I made the basketball team and was team captain. The boys team practiced at the same time as us, one of us being upstairs while the other was downstairs. Since we both finished practice at the same time, I befriended some of the guys. One of them was half black and we had the same taste in music. Coincidentally, we both were supposed to be at Evergreen high school before we moved in the summer and ended up at Heritage high school instead. One day after practice, I just got off the bus and was walking home when I ran into him and some of his friends that went to Evergreen. They all seemed nice and also played basketball. This was around the time that AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) was extremely popular, so we all exchanged information to chat online. One of the guys messaged me the next night. He told me about his half sister that was half black and we spent some time talking about basketball. Then he told me that he thought I was pretty and asked me out. I politely declined and told him I barely knew him, as I met him 24 hours ago. He got upset and said "whatever, you look like a Halloween mask anyways". I was momentarily speechless. I figured since he didn't go to my school, I'd probably never see him again so I didn't reply and I blocked him. Fast forward to the next year, his family moved into our district and he transferred to my school. He never apologized or spoke to me again, dispute seeing me almost every day.
