To rent or not to rent....

It is important that I describe the people in this experience: A ( Blonde, white female) friend and her (darker tone, male) husband asked me to help them look for a house to rent. They were new to the community and didn't know the area very well. I obliged. She had an appointment with the owner (elderly white woman) of a house that was up for rent. The woman told my friend that she didn't have any other people interested in the house, yet. That was an hour before we met with the lady. I went with my friend because her husband was running late and didn't think he would make it there in time. When me and my friend approached the doorway to the house, the lady greeted us. She looked at us. She stared at us. Basic introductions were made. I was identified by name only. The lady showed us around the house rather quickly. She directed all conversation towards my friend. About half way through the tour, the lady looked at my friend and me and asked if we were a couple. My friend and I looked at each other. We laughed out loud and said, no we were friends. At that point, the lady's demeanor changed. She was more pleasant and became more detailed with the highlights of the house. As the tour of the house came to an end, there was a knock at the door. It was my friend's husband. The lady answered, how can i help you? He said, his name and the he is my friend's husband. Mind you, he is filipino with a darker skin tone. The lady's demeanor changed back to the way it was when we first arrived. My friend asked the lady a few questions, as her husband quickly looked around the house. The lady couldn't keep up with the questions because she was busy watching the husband's every move. The lady then said, she had a few more showings before she made a decision. We all left. My friend, her husband and I went to lunch and discussed the weird vibe from the lady. Before we finished lunch (within an hour), the lady called and said she rented the house to someone else. Yeahhhh, right!!! This wasn't their first encounter with this behavior. However, it was my first experience.
